St. James Pudding

Ingredients
- 1 2/3 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon, each, cloves, allspice, nutmeg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- 1/2 pound dates, or figs
Instructions
- Mix and sift dry ingredients, add milk, molasses, melted shortening, and dates or figs, cut in pieces. Turn into a greased mold and steam two and one-half hours. Serve with Arrowroot Sauce (see page 161).
